How to Paint Metal Surfaces Using White Knight Rust Guard®

Painting metal requires more than just a topcoat. Different substrates such as steel, galvanised iron and previously painted surfaces all require specific preparation and priming to ensure proper adhesion and durability.

White Knight Rust Guard systems are designed to guide you through each step from cleaning and treating rust through to priming and topcoating, ensuring a long-lasting, professional finish across fences, gates, railings, roofing, structural steel and more.

To tackle your next metal painting DIY project, follow the steps outlined below.

Pre Prime
All surfaces must be clean, dry and free from grease, oil and contaminants. Use Rust Guard Solvent to completely clean the surface and remove all contaminants.
Treat Rust (if applicable)
Rust treatment is only suitable for ferrous metals such as steel and wrought iron. Where rust cannot be completely removed by sanding it down, use White Knight Rust Guard Rust Converter.

Treat Rust (if applicable)

Person painting a metal railing with rust guard metal primer. They wear gloves and hold a paintbrush and a can of medium grey primer.
Primer selection is critical and must match the substrate. Use Rust Guard Metal Primer on steel and wrought iron. Use Rust Guard True Bite Primer on smooth or previously painted metal. Use Rust Guard SLS Etch Primer on galvanised, Zincalume® and aluminium surfaces.

How to Choose the Right Topcoat When Painting Metal

Topcoat selection should align with both the substrate and the performance requirements of the project:

Use Rust Guard Epoxy Enamel on steel and exterior metal surfaces where maximum durability, abrasion resistance and long-term corrosion protection are required.

Use Rust Guard Quick Dry Advanced Enamel where a faster drying system is required, particularly for projects needing quick turnaround without compromising adhesion.

Use Rust Guard Hammered Finish to achieve a decorative textured appearance on properly prepared metal surfaces.

Use Rust Guard Cold Gal Silver where a zinc-rich, galvanised-style protective coating is required, particularly for exposed steel or repairs to galvanised surfaces.

Always ensure compatibility between primer and topcoat systems.
